Abbey Driver Training - April 2009
ABBEY DRIVERS TRAINED TO LEVEL 2 NVQ IN DRIVING GOODS VEHICLES Abbey Road Tanks Ltd (ART) is pleased to announce plans to have all Drivers trained to the nationally recognised NVQ Level 2 for Driving Goods Vehicles. This City & Guilds NVQ certificate will confirm their knowledge, understanding and skills needed to carry out their job. The initiative is part of a strategy headed by Company Chairman, Harry Conroy, to completely revamp the company's in-house Driver training which currently focuses mainly on training new drivers in addition to some driver re-training. Harry's extensive background in Human Resource training will ensure that ART's training is systematic, productive and highly effective. His experience in this area spans decades with his role as head of ‘Grid International (UK) Ltd' which specialises in Leadership, team building & organisation culture development. ART National Driver Trainer, Roy Locket has already qualified to Level 3 NVQ Assessor which enables him to act as an in-house assessor for all drivers undertaking the NVQ assessment. The course involves a 1 day in-cab assessment in which photographs are taken of the driver carrying out each of the requirements followed by a 45 minute exam. Once complete, the outcome of the assessment and examination are then sent to the NVQ assessors for them to decide if the Driver meets the required standards before issuing an NVQ certificate. The NVQ is divided into the following units;-
In addition to the NVQ program, ART have also re-written its own ‘Driver Training Manual' to ensure that all new starters are given the same training to a set standard. All new starters undergo 2 days in-classroom induction with the National Driver Trainer before working in-cab for a further 5 days minimum with the regional Driver Trainer. The in-classroom induction process has been adjusted to suit the standards of the Driver CPC requirement which combined with the NVQ assessment, will contribute to most of the 35 hour CPC training requirement for all HGV drivers which was introduced recently. As well as the formalised training, ART carry out random assessments of Drivers on customer sites and Abbey sites to ensure they are carrying out their duties as per the set standards and also that they are acting in a safe and courteous manner. Improving and standardising ART Driver Training is high on the company's agenda as it seeks to improve all aspects of its service to its blue chip customer base. |
